I was recently surprised to find this novel on one of my shelves; I saw the movie adaptation of the novel recently but did not remember owning the actual book. The movie was full of promise but ultimately disappointing, so I was pretty curious to see how good a read the actual novel was. Sphere is my first Michael Crichton novel, and I have to say I was quite impressed with Crichton's prowess. There are some logical flaws and inconsistencies in the plot, but Crichton is an incredibly gifted storyteller; I eagerly breezed through this novel in short order. While it is heavy on dialogue, the story touches on a number of aspects of the human personality while mixing in some profound if problematic science fiction in the process. This is a fast-paced thriller that definitely registers impressively on the suspense meter, particularly during the climactic late chapters. While the ending is something of a letdown, the story leading up to it is gripping and fascinating, and important clues and plot points are presented with much more subtlety and effectiveness than what you will find in the movie adaptation.
The novel is built around an incredible discovery; in the middle of the South Pacific, lying all but buried on the bottom of the ocean, rests a spacecraft of unknown origin. Psychologist Norman Johnson, the author of a secret government paper on Recommendations for the Human Contact Team to Interact with Unknown Life Forms (a less than serious paper he wrote primarily for the money) is called to the site, where he is informed that he will be part of a team of scientists sent to study the mysterious craft. Alongside him are an irascible Navy project commander, a brilliant, young astrophysicist/planetary geologist, a complicated female zoologist/biochemist, and a noted mathematician/logician. This unlikely team of deep ocean explorers soon find themselves in an artificial habitat resting alongside the location of the mysterious ship. Their exploration of the site yields more questions than answers, as the ship turns out to be an American spaceship from the future. The truly enigmatic discovery onboard, though, is a giant sphere of unknown composition. As the story unfolds, the team of explorers finds themselves effectively stranded on the ocean floor for a period of some days, and strange and frightening things begin to happen after one scientist somehow enters the sphere. The scientists find themselves in communication with a supposedly alien entity who calls himself Jerry; whoever and whatever Jerry is, he seems to have the power to manifest remarkable physical creations and changes in reality. The habitat and the team inside it soon comes under attack by such dangerous creatures as giant squid and killer jellyfish, but the problems eventually internalize themselves inside the group dynamic, a group that is shrinking in size as time goes by. The mysterious Sphere imparts an amazing power to those who enter it, a power that such individuals may not even be consciously aware of wielding. Ultimately, the last remnants of the research team begin pointing fingers at one another and take steps to insure their own individual survival in the face of an unquantifiable threat, making this novel a gripping psychological thriller based in a fascinating science fiction environment.
Once the team arrives in the underwater habitat, nonstop action ensues. One emergency after another challenges the crew, and the group dynamic of the team ebbs and flows along with each jarring crisis. Along the way, we see ever more clearly into the minds and ways of thinking of our main characters, and a significant amount of ideas are expressed concerning the human condition. Crichton provides for no obligatory rest areas along the way, as he takes the reader for an incredible ride that had me turning pages hand over fist in anticipation of what was to come. Some of the science is questionable, but Crichton surely makes it all sound more than plausible. The only real problem with the novel is a logical breakdown of sorts in the concluding chapters. Still, the desperate attempts of the remaining explorers to survive, when they cannot even trust one another, make for a riveting reading experience. Sphere is by no means a perfect novel, but I found it captivating and basically addictive up until the somewhat disappointing ending. The movie adaptation takes significant liberties with the original story, so I would urge you not to let the movie's failings prevent you from immersing yourself in this eminently readable novel.

Intriguing as always, exciting from the first page, strong for the first 2/3rds and less "editorializing" than usual, but it's just not as good as his higher concept novels. But it's still very enjoyable all the way through, and as always makes you think. It feels a little dated now, but I re-read it last week and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Sphere should definitely be a part of any Crichton fan's library. Skip the movie, though. Here, the science is less "convincing" than in Jurrassic Park (which is mostly convincing, but stretched) and Prey (which is better writing and fun, but not convincing). But that doesn't matter, because Crichton can write an adventure like few others (as long as character isn't important--character's here take backseat to concept and science). Pace, as always is good. More a rollicking adventure than "something to think about" (typical of later novels) and quite enjoyable on that level. It's the kind of novel you'll tear through in a weekend at most. And that's a good thing.

Beware: This machine comes with WINDOWS 7 preloaded. Windows 7 will NOT run older games or software that you may have. I had to load a less than satisfactory "emulator" in order to get some of my software to run. My last machine had XP and there was no problem. Research on Windows 7 reveled that Windows 7 uses 64 bits and older games ran on 16 bits. Microsoft allowed 16 bit software to run on its' platform up through Windows XP, with Windows 7 "they" decided to not support 16 bit activity. So, unless your new to the game, or you don't care to keep any of your old software, go ahead and get a Window 7 machine. If you like some of your software that you've spent bundles on over the years, RUN, RUN Very FAST AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWS 7 Computers.

This Alienware desktop is a joke. Sure, it may come with an Intel Core i7 2600K, but it has an NVIDIA GTS 450 GPU! This computer won't run games like Crysis nor Battlefield 3. And it's priced at $1,555?! C'mon, Dell. With Alienware, you're just paying for a brand name

i am very interested with buying the product but by looking at the screen i really dont know much about it is this a alx or a r3 what is it also is this a new system i mean when did this exact model come out and does it have its original boxes and i dont really understand which processer does it have.

Outside
The Front compartment of the backpack is protetected by a very durable shield. It feels a lot like a softer, but still quite hard, cellphone case. On the outside, their are two side pockets which open out to the side of the back. They are slim, but still usable. They fit a normal plastic water bottle great, with a slight bulge visible in the shield. I would plan on using these pockets to hold my graphing calculator, one water bottle, and headphone earbuds.
The zippers all over are made of solid, lightweight, metal, accented with the alienhead logo. They all slide nice and easy. The main compartment zipper goes all away around the bag, almost 275 degrees around. The bottom has too strong but flexible grips/standy thingers.
The padding that comes into contact with your back could definitely be called orthopedic. minimal near the spine for breathability, and pillowy cushioned around the lowerback, shoulder blade, and hip areas. The straps are lack luster in terms of cushion though. They are not however uncomfortable, just a little thin.
The phone compartment in the front holds an EnV2 and Blackberry Storm snugly.
The handle at the top is quite annoying. If you lean too far forward it bumps into your neck like someone tapping you quite hard to get your attention.
First Compartment
The first compartment is protected by the plastic shield. On that same side their are ten thin compartments meant for holding CD's. Not many people carry around 10 CD's barenaked like that though, so I'm going to put a one hundred dollar bill in each of them as placeholders.The top has a keyring.
On the opposite side, there is an MP3 holder, mouse holder, three loops for writing utensils, a backpack-wide mesh compartment at the bottom, and a padded zippered chamber hanging at the top. The MP3 hole is also at the top of this compartment.
Second Compartment
The second compartment is very simple. The side closer to the shield has a space wide enough for two Asus EEpc notebooks, or five college-ruled notepads.
On the otherside of the compartment, there is a mesh pocket wide and tall enough to hold two magazines without bulging.
Main Compartment
The main compartment is HUGE! The size of the entire backpack. It has a single mesh, plastic filmed pocket, that reads: "Checkpoint Friendly". It's for frequent flyers whos bags are inspected often, it opens easily. The sides of this pocket are lined with a fleece feeling fabric.

So far I've owned about three different types and styles of laptop bags. I've gone through a Targus messenger bag, a Belkin sling backpack, and now this beautiful piece of craftsmanship and comfort. I do have to admit I was a little skeptical about this bag and because it is a little pricey. I'm glad to say this bag has lived up to all my expectations. I own a Alienware Area-51 7700 which I retired a few years ago but was impressed on just how much room I still had when I put that monster laptop inside this bag. Even though the bag isn't for the Alienware but for my new HP dv7-2185dx which is not as big as the Alienware laptop but you will definitely have a lot of room to spare. This bag comes with all the bells and whistles, many pockets for all your needs. This bag is also sturdy and well padded in all the areas to keep your baby nice and comfortable as you travel or go to school. I do agree with one of the previous reviews about the back pack smelling but its not bad and will go away with use. It smells like its been inside a plastic bag but it will go away. I did look at a lot of different sized bags that would accommodate 17.3" sized laptops and this one is the only one that had the look and style I was looking for. All the other bags looked cheesy in comparison. After packing this laptop with my laptop, external drives, mouse, power cable, pens, pencils, sunglasses, and sketch pad I still had room enough to put a couple of books inside the bag. If you're looking for an awesome bag and are willing to spend a little more to get a little more, you should definitely buy this bag. I hope this helps!

I bought this case as a companion for my Alienware M11x. I use it in my car at at soccer practice to play games. Scoot the seat all the way back, upzip it and open up and you have a self-contained lapdesk for the M11x. It is great to transport too, looks like a binder with a handle on the neck and a detachable shoulder strap. It even has a clever mesh area so the cooling fan still works when using as a lapdesk. The black material doesn't scratch the notebook. On the outside is a mesh pocket to hold the power supply. There are several places for papers inside the case. There are corner wedges to hold the laptop in the case and a velcro strechable strap that secures the laptop when not in use. It has a nice Alienware head and swirl pattern design. Inside the case is a hard divider built in that keeps the laptop safe. I highly recommend this case and this laptop for on-the-go.
It makes those 2 hour practices go by faster.

Well, i got this to go with my m11x, and since it was made for it, of course it fits perfectly. My only problem with it is the inability to carry a charger and mouse well with it, especially since the m11x doesn't have a long battery life.

I placed the order for this computer Thursday night, and with one day shipping received it Saturday morning. Both Amazon and UPS have figured this logistics thing out.
Out of the box everything looks great. All of the specs lined up except one... it says it has an 8-cell battery; however, seeing that they don't make an 8 cell battery for this laptop, i have to think that maybe they meant to say a 9-cell battery? Well either way, that's not what this laptop has- it has a 6 cell battery. This gives you a lofty 1 hour of battery life just idling in windows. Now if you buy this kind of laptop, the chances of you just sitting in windows are fairly slim. The gaming battery life, I'm not sure, but I'm not holding my breath for more than 20 minutes.
That may not be much of a gripe, considering that this is more like a portable desktop, but it is irritating when you buy something that's misadvertised.
As for the performance, I was playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 last night and it looked stellar!
Bottom line, Dell quoted me a computer with the exact same specs, but they wanted $1900, so I see this as a bargain.

My last laptop was a 17" Sony and I wanted something a little bit smaller. My choices were between an ASUS Republic of Gamer laptop and the Alienware. I decided on the alienware due to the amount of troubling posts about hardware failure with ASUS products. The only real problem I saw with Alienware products were people complaing of cost. I do not know about you, but I was raised under the old saying that you get what you pay for. And I have been very pleased with my new Alienware laptop. I will let you know that you will need to contact Alienware to transfer your 1 year warranty from Amazon to yourself and if you so desire you can purchase longer coverage from Alienware as well. Now, I will also say that this laptop is a little heavy for a 15". A lot of people do not like the touchpad, I am indifferent about it considering I never use it anyway, I prefer wireless mice. Also your battery will geek out very fast unless you alter your power settings. Mine lasts about 2 hours, however I am normally wired in anyway so that really does not bother me. This laptop was purchased to go offshore with me and allow me to play games as well as be my main computer at home where it stays put. It has performed very well. All my games run at high to ultra settings without any issues at all. Heck even playing World of Warcraft, I can run into any high populated zones with all settings maxed out and still get 60 to 70fps. One last bit of information for you as well, this exact build on Alienwares website usually runs several hundred dollars more than on Amazons website. Also the M15X is very upgradable, so the choice is up to you.

I have a 17in HP laptop and it was nearly impossible to find a bag for it, let alone a properly padded one to protect the machine during travel. This bag fits the bill. I have traveled on the train and a plane with this one, and it kept my laptop safe; it fit under the seat like the airline required; it was easy to access for the security checkpoint; and the bag is roomy enough to hold extra items, which saved me having to check luggage (which now costs a ridiculous fee). You really cannot go wrong with this bag--even if you have a smaller machine, buy this bag. It looks great, it is sleek and easy to carry and has room for everything you will ever need, and then some. It is also versatile, having both handles to carry it like a briefcase, and a detachable shoulder strap.
Also, the image seems to have been corrected--the proper picture is displayed here. The backpack version isn't as nice and has "alienware" icons and name-branding all over it, which looks cheesy and cheap. This bag is really nice and looks professional--the Alienware icons are subtle and very minimal.

Even if you don't own an Alienware 17" in. laptop, this bag has alot of functionality. Even a slot for sliding onto the rails of a roll about luggage suitcase.
The bag itself is very well padded inside and out. Surprisingly enough that chrome Alien logo, is a tuff extra outer padding where your laptop would fit on the inside of the bag itself. Can be over the shoulder strung, or handle carried.
Long story short, this bag is one killer piece of work. I carry mine whenever i go on trips or out in the field. It holds all of my peripherals, and i mean all, plus essentials. Plus added extras, cords, etc., etc. It's a big bag, but not too big that it's a bulky suitcase.
This one is a keeper.

The M14X fits snuggly in here but the design has a pretty big flaw. The charger for this lap top is rather large and though the charger does fit in the side pocket, it just barely fits and is a struggle to get it in and out. I would recommend this case for protection purposes but this may not be the best option for a travel case or something that will be used on the go

I was not sure about this case because of the other reviews, once i actually received the item I was impressed. It is a little tight on the computer but you can definitely tell that this case was specifically designed for the m14x. When you first open the case it has a flap that covers the front of the computer and this is very nice because it adds protection to the pointy edges. Would definitely recommend to other m14x owners.

I purchased the Asus laptop based on a recommendation from my son, who has had an Asus for the last 2 years. The G53SX is a great PC! It was delivered early and was exactly what I had ordered, all parts in place and ready to rock and roll! I wanted a good gaming machine for Lord of the Rings Online, and it is just perfect for it! The HD screen is wonderful. It's a somewhat heavier laptop, but I chalk that up to the fact that it is made out of sturdy, quality, materials. Oh, one thing that I should mention is how quiet this laptop is. Compared to my older HP laptop, I barely know I am running anything, even my hi-def game! And it is super-cool, temperature-wise, too! I've had it for about a month or so and am very happy with it!

Just got this from J;R as it's local.
Only had it a few days so this is just a first impression -
What a beaut! - This laptop looks and feels like my perfect ideal for a laptop, understated (no crappy chrome-esq plastic, big glowing lights etc)just a very nice matte black soft finish, nice lines, small(ish) logo, everything looks and feels so solid it just comes together and seems right, a good weight, its not trying to be sleek and light, its just doing one job (high performance) and that is how it looks and feels, I will put up with the weight (not that bad in the included rucksack). So my first impression is very favorable.
So I'm in the process of getting all the software sorted out, which i guess is fun.
Here's my initial pro's/cons:
Pro's:
1 - This beast barely breaks a sweat - I mean its so quite, the stealth image does do it justice, it's very quite almost silent, when I reran the window index thingy the sound never changed, and doesn't even feel warm.
2 - Screen is lovely Matte and very very bright clear and generally amazing, way too intense in a dark room, my old dell xps 1330 which is sitting besides with both at max brightness it looks like a dull yellow compared, it has very good angular visibility too.
3 - Keyboard is nice, firm well spaced out, I like the keyboard lights - without it keys actually very hard to see in low light, as the text doesn't contrast at all with the black keys.
3 - Touchpad nice size and nice to have multi-touch gestures.
4 - Asus software, actually some useful software(and bloatware see Cons) - like fastboot which delays boot items.
5 - Backpack (rucksack) good amount of pockets, sturdy and compact, only just fits laptop in fact, but has plenty of space for extra stuff, nice touch Asus.
I don't know about performance as not pushed it at all yet, but from the index score its pretty good, I am mainly using it for graphic's work so its more important to be fast processor and memory than graphics, but I am tempted to buy and try some of the latest games cos this beast is designed for them. Btw in case you don't know one downside to this rig is the graphics card has a 128bit memory bus instead of 192, which from what I have read makes a difference, the 17" has the 192 bit bus. It's no big deal for me and having a usable size for a laptop was more important than Memory bus speed, still would have preferred to have the option for this, recon most gamers will pay the extra and Asus should have made some models with the bigger bus, and given us the choice.
Cons:
1 - Bloatware - crappy crappy annoying bloatware, such a shame cos in my mind Asus has really got there stuff together, making some seriously decent equipment and marketing and doing everything right, except bowing to the pressure to include crap on their rigs (for a small dime no doubt) - I decided to create a backup disc set and reformat which took hours only to find that the backup disc puts all the crap on again except the drivers which you need, so either way you have to uninstall it all. I ended up taking almost everything off then using the asus utility to load the drivers and useful stuff back on. thing is there are tons of processes running and I hate not knowing whats happening behind the scenes on my rig, I wish I could completely disable/delete most of these processes and services running but I don't know what they all do.
2 - included gaming mouse is nice, uninstalled software for it, limited control and adds to the startup.
Will update after a while when I learn more.
Update 1:
Had a problem with the Realtek Lan network drivers, they kept failing to install fully and could not get windows to get the drivers to work or install, spent many hours trying to find the solution online and in their help guides, was thinking either the lan hardware was dead or in some kind of zombie like deep sleep. Eventually got it to work, uninstalled everything Realtek driver and windows device hardware, rebooted then manually installed by handpicking the type of device and the driver -thankfully everything started to work! - I now have lan working and don't have to do a emergency disk reinstall from scratch or send it back.
Power4Gear Hybrid seems really buggy, doesn't connect quickly enough with the hardware button, also when I save it to screen timeout it doesn't work and the screen just stayed on, all night! - not a major bug but hope they fix with a update.
Also with all the software installed or most of it, my processes list is way too big for me! I like to know what's running and keep my system simple and bare, but this is more about the extra software included, and being unsure what I can uninstall.

Excellent choice for Gamers and builder who wants a stable Windows 7 64-bit PC systems. I played Crysis 2 and the game is very smooth as I am using Radeon HD 6950 2GB and together with this Kingston HyperX 8GB Kit. When not playing games, I do my system laboratory using VMWare Workstation 7 and running 5 virtual machines on top my Windows 7. I run Citrix laboratory using VM's and my virtual lab is very fast.

Product listed in the ASUS p6x58E VLC list. Wanted to O.C. it to 1600. I've used Kingston before to upgrade my Asus eeepc - and because the RAM hasn't failed me yet, I'm loyal.
Easy to install, practically idiot proof as there is a notch that prevents you from reversing the RAM. Make sure the RAM is seated properly/firmly - POST recognised all of it right away.
PC working for a month so far - so no issues.
Not sure why people have such issues.
Plan not to overclock it further than 1600 since I'm not a hardcore gamer and bought RAM for adobe and Maya usage.

After being a SONY VAIO user for a few years I was very anxious to put the Alienware laptop to the test. Although I am not much of a gamer these days I DO multi-task to a ridiculous degree. I often have 3 browsers open with dozens of tabs as well as running web authoring software, Photo shop and other utilities. At the time of ordering my laptop from Amazon I also ordered a 4 GB RAM stick to even out the odd 6 GB included with the M17. 8 GB appears to be sufficient to my needs. My first impression was overwhelming. There is no denying this laptop was built to impress. Every one that gazes on this laptop has had nothing less than Awe to express. One friend said it reminded him of a stealth fighter. All the lighting and matte black case is really attractive. I love the slot loading opti drive, even though just like the SONY it is on the right side, totally bumping in to my trackball every time I eject a disc. But better than SONY it does provide plenty of USB ports, 5 over the 2 supplied by SONY. Most import there are ports on both sides. The SONY had 2 right next to the disk drive again being totally in the way of any mouse or trackball.....
Now for actual use: I have been using it for a few weeks now. First off like another review indicates there was (ZERO) software, free or trial that had to be uninstalled like EVERY other laptop I have ever dealt with. That was VERY nice. I did not know at time of purchase that this unit had (2) hard drives running in a Raid O. Interesting. The access to the drives and Memory is very easy from the bottom unlike a lot of other laptops. It appears the multiple cooling fans are easy to get to and clean when required.
Even with the dual Raid O hard drive THIS laptop appears to boot up a bit slower than the VAIO. I think this has something to do with the Alienware face recognition and other ALienware related esthetics. I am sure this can be all uninstalled or deactivated. Not a huge deal at the moment but I thought I should mention it. Face recognition is very annoying until it gets to know you. Still may be quicker to just type in your password. A very unique feature any way you look at it.(no pun intended) There has been no issues installing any of my drivers to external devices I use.
This will be my short list of complaints:
- The SONY has a better screen. no doubt. Plus a blueray player.
- Matte Black looks really cool as long as you keep it clean. It seems to attract dust like a magnet and it shows bad.
- The actual height of the keyboard is about an inch higher than what I am used to so I had to readjust my office chair to type comfortably.
- After the newness of the pretty lights begins to become normal one might wonder if they may be an issue in the future. Also the machine has more of a kids look (not sure it would fit in to an office environment). I do miss the thin elegance of the SONY. This is a VERY heavy laptop. Even though I never take my big laptop with me anywhere (I have a netbook for that) this laptop is VERY bulky and appears to weigh twice that of the SONY.
- I think if SONY would have offered some of the features found on the M17 I would be still using the SONY at 2/3s the price.
Bottom line: If you can afford this expensive laptop. Give it a try. Buying from Amazon I had it on my door step the day after ordering it.....NICE! Amazon return policy: THE BEST! I don't think I would have tried this laptop if Amazon did not offer it.
I hope this helps potential M17 customers make a decision.

Holy Cow! This retails on Dell's website same specs for $2,400 less shipping. I740QM fully upgradeable as well as the whole laptop is upgradeable. However where does this need upgrading maybe the processor? I mean c'mon dual GPU's both being the high end ATI 5870's. No computer at this price point to include the ASUS G73JW A1 can compete with this beast.. Awesome computer with awesome potential. Also the M17X doesn't come loaded with bloatware like ASUS. I was an ASUS G73JH owner, still have it and yet it took a lot of time cleaning up the factory sent laptop from ASUS. I ordered this with beast with next day shipping and it arrived just as advertised. Awesome computer so far.. You can't beat the price for these specs and the Alienware brand name.

It's amazingly awesome, haven't had any problems yet! Tech support is appearently bad but i hear that you've been able to contact through Dell and not Alienware. Great resolution screen (I can play Crysis 2 with 25 FPS with native res) cheap cheap optical drives floating around as an option. Has great speakers! i have really really bad acoustics in my family room, but with the speakers up all the way i can hear it from the back of my house! So many LED's with alienware LED software and if your computer has a problem, you can use Alien Re-spawn, which comes with this computer. Has LED's on the hard drive, fan on the bottom, illuminative keyboard, and on the dual speakers in the front. It's classified as an ultra-portable and that's exactly what it is. 7+ hours on integrated graphics. Oh! and you can switch the graphics almost instantly with the press of a button from discrete to integrated. (Intel HD graphics 3000). Can overclock by going into the BIOS and just selecting "overclock enable/disable". Great computer, affordable price. Great video quality, and good Internet connectivity, great for streaming media like YouTube and Netflix. As an added bonus, if you order from Dell, you can ship it with a game and accessories like a keyboard and mouse, and also customizable LED's from the website factory installed to your personal liking. Has a great metal casing that is VERY durable. BEST computer I've ever had!

When first purchasing this I did not know what to think. Wanted a good laptop but did not want to pay alot of money for. Went to Dell site and for everything laptop has in it put it why over the price I purchased it for. It Intell dual Core processing speed 1.30Ghz,4GB OF Ram and can expand up to 8GB. And a 250GB Harddrive and a very good 11.1 viewing screen with a 720p HD viewing and a dedicated graphics cards 1GB which means one hella gaming machine. Well i was really leary about buying an alienware mostly because of the price and less expensive laptops you could get for a lesser price with the same or higher specs. Well here's the reason this is so worth it, and much better. First off all parts on the inside are intel genuine parts, Nvidia genuine parts and the whole laptop is build from the ground up with super top notch components. Lots of computers such as Acers, Gateway, HP, and even Sony use other companies to manufacture there motherboards graphic cards, screens etc etc. This thing is an absolute sherman tank, and just looks and feels down right indestructible. When i pulled it out of the box (which looked like is cost about 100$ itself i was like wow impressive). It was wrapped in a velvet black Alienware sleeve which was pretty unique, upon opening it i couldn't believe the weight(could be a con for some people), and then i realized this thing has METAL components, on the sides, bottom and the back of the screen. How often do you see that, never? So yes this thing is well worth the money. Now onto the specs. What it doesnt tell you(i'm writing about the Best Buy model) is that this unit is equipted with two yes two GPU's. One is the main Nvidia GTX 260, the other an Nvidia 9400, so basically the more powerful GPU feeds off the lesser one to give you extra graphical and gaming ability, and yes it shows, big time. The resolution may not be full 1080p(its 1440x900) but who really cares? Check on Xbox and Ps3 and you'll find there are very very few games that even run at full 1080p resolution, even upscaled the games look noting like on this thing. I've played Bioshock, Red Faction Guerilla, Resident Evil 5, and Crysis so far all without a hitch, even Crysis you can play at very high setting with a playable frame rate. The glossy screen really brings out the details and vibrant colors especially with antialiasing, even though its not the brightest in the world, its great. The slot loading DVD-RW is great, loads very quickly, and runs quietly. Don't be fooled by all the hype of the new I series intel chipsets, the i7 did not make that much of an impression on me, this thing has the Quad 2 Core running at 2.0 ghz, and the system rating for calculations per second are 6.9. The i7 in most of the other gaming machines is about 7.0 or 7.2, whoopi do, who really cares Also the overall look of this machine is just beautiful, the keys are atomatically set to blue, but you can change them to about any color you want using the Alienware Utility Console.
The battery can get up to 3 hours if you turn down the screen and don't really game TO heavy, so thats definitely a plus. I got fed up with Asus because of allll kinds of wireless issues, blue screens of death, disc read errors, squashed unresponsive keys, and just some overall major screwups with the machines themselves. So yes i payed the extra money figuring this would be better and it way surpassed my expectations, being that it blows the more modern but fading Asus G60 and G72 series laptops out of the water. The speakers in the front also glow the same color as the keys or a different variety if you want, which is really something. On another note i opened the box with the power adapter and its a flat box type shaped, not the usual box Xbox 360 type adapter you usually get with gaming machines. I will add another 2 gigs(to get 6) just to add it, but heck it doesnt even need it, this thing is still a multitasking beast. I think anything over 6 gigs is really uneeded sine most games require no more than 3 gigs anyways, and that would be a shock. So as i've praised this is the first REAL gaming laptop i've ever owned, all the rest were ok but nothing compared to this thing. When they say its made for heavy duty gaming and multitasking they weren't kidding. This beast will surely stand the test of time, and is also upgradable for any GPU out there, but i don't think i'll ever need anything more. If you have the cash don't waste your time with Asus, Cyperpower, or even Toshiba Qosmio, even it the specs are better this thing is specifically designed for heavy use. The sound quality is the loudest i've ever heard, and also has a subwoofer. The only one thing that is a slight small issue is when your playing games the fan is realllly loud, but i really could care less considering i know it will never overheat, umm thats what the fans and cooling system are for. I've had other laptops where the fan didn't even run, not good. So enough going on and on, if you have the cash or credit just get it, its not just for gamers its for anyone that ones a really awesome looking and performing laptop to last for many years. One last funny thing is you get an Alienware black hat, and a manual bound in leather that looks like a bible, and also an Alienware alienhead sticker for, well wherever you wanna stick it. HA.
Only two things, no blu ray, which i could care less since i have it on my PS3, and i wish in these units they would put a 16x or 18x DVD burner, instead of just 8x.

I purchased this laptop a year and three months ago. Both the video card and the motherboard failed one month after the waranty expired. I sent it in to Dell and for about $600 they replaced the failed components. Just over 30 days after this, the video card failed again. Interestingly, this was just after the 30 day waranty on their maintenance expired! Further, Dell no longer supports the computer and referred me to Z-Tronics to have the video card replaced. Z-Tronics just told me that they don't have the video card and have no idea when they will get them again. So, now I have a $2k+ brick.
My advice? Don't by an Alienware. Dell is supporting these computers very poorly.

Currently, I own a 2008 Dell Latitude E6400, which always gets the "blue screen of death" from over-heating. Keep in mind, I often crossed my legs on my lap, allowing sufficient airflow to the cooling vent. I honestly thought notebook coolers were a niche product. Having had experience with the awful Targus PA248U1 Chill Mat, I had virtually given up on a notebook cooler being able to solve my alarming heat problem. However, I perused Amazon's site for a few hours and did my homework. I soon discovered the criteria that my prospective cooler needed to fit:
-College student's meager budget
-Solve severe laptop over-heating problem
-Style wasn't important. An ugly/effective cooler is better than vice versa.
-Casual web-surfing/movie-watching/paper-writing use. I don't need a gaming cooler, since I don't leave my laptop on for like 6-8 hours at a time.
-Ability to be used on the lap. I do lots of homework on the couch at my school's study lounge.
-Good Warranty when Amazon's return period expires
-Preferably one fan
-Preferably with an extra USB port
-Preferably a company that specializes in desktop/laptop cooling
-Most important: Something that will LAST a long time, more than 1 year.
Front-Runners
-Zalman NC-300U
-One fan, not-bulky, great workmanship, extra USB ports and fan control...man this had it all! While the price was a bit of a stretch (I still could have afforded it), it did not look lap-friendly at all.
-Antec "Classic" Cooler
-The three year warranty and trustability on the market since 2003 was really, REALLY tempting. However, the sole reason I did not choose this was that the wire adaptor looked very flimsy.
-X-Pad
-No fans, no electricity, cheap price, highly durable, effective rubber stoppers and beating out other coolers in a Cnet.com test made this very tempting! However, I have heard the customer service is non-responsive, the new rubber stinks and some users have reported the heat is transferred to their legs. Most of all, cooling ability depends on the laptop's design. Since my laptop's vent is on the side and not on in the center, I was skeptical. By the way, here is the link to that Cnet.com test:

-This, in my opinion, was the most similar to my final decision. However, it looked really bulky and didn't seem suitable for lap use.
-Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE55US
-I really wanted to give Targus another chance, no hard feelings. It looked really roomy! However, it was reputed to not last longer than a year. After looking at the price against the reliability, I decided against it
-Cooler Master Notepal U2
-While the fan-positioning, price and 1 best-selling status made this a front-runner, I decided against this for 3 reasons: the fans weren't known to last long, the wiring was exposed and it wasn't good for lap use
-Logitech Cooling Pad N100
-The silent operation, rear-intake and how it was designed specifically for the lap was really tempting. However, the material looked flimsy, it was reviewed to not last long and the airflow was not adjustable. I needed a really strong fan.
First Impressions
When I opened to box, I was immediately struck by how much sturdier, classier and compact it looks in person. I was reading the reviews and I noticed some say its bulky, but for my needs, I don't find this an issue. I carry a leather briefcase in addition to my laptop backpack, so I'll just stick this in there so it doesn't get crushed.
Performance
I used a free program called CPUID Hardware Monitor to record the temperature with and without the cooler.
Without and wireless on (casual web surfing): 108 Degrees Fahrenheit
With (high speed) and wireless on (watching movie online): 100 Degrees Fahrenheit
With (high speed) and wireless on (casual web surfing): 98 Degrees Fahrenheit
With (high speed) and wireless off: 94 Degrees Fahrenheit
Pros
-The aluminum "mesh belly" dissipates heat effectively. I'd also imagine that it would make using a can of compressed air easy.
-Cool Light-up effect. Not only does it look space-age, but it lets you know that the cooler is on.
-On/Off Switch. As I have been told, this is more valuable than you think because detaching the USB cord while the fan is on could possibly shorten the cooler's life. I would turn it off first before disconnecting it
-Fan Control. Its stiff (indicating great build-quality) and responsive. At a touch or two below max level, it's still very quiet!
-Having one large fan instead of two smaller ones is rather nice. Not only is it quieter, but distributes heat evenly. Even though my laptop's main vent is located on the left side (as opposed to the "windier" center of the cooler), it still cools very well!
-Pop-out legs for height adjustment
-2 USB ports, one to connect your laptop and one to replace the USB port you gave up connecting this cooler. That means you don't give up any USB ports at all to connect this cooler to.
-Detachable USB cord is well-constructed. If you don't want to use up your laptop's battery, you can plug in the USB cord into an MP3/Cell phone charger.

-Doesn't look easy to take apart to really clean inside the nook and crannies.
-Perforated edges don't hold my laptop securely. The crannies between my laptop and battery pack thankfully provide a good anchor to the cooler. A rubber stopper on the surface (like on the Cooler Master Notepal U2) or pop-up legs on the bottom (like on the Logitech Speaker Lap Desk N700) would have been nice.
To buy or not to buy...?
For day one, I'll let the performance speak for itself. However, I will keep you posted if anything arises.

Unbelievable difference in temp!
My older HP was getting very hot to the touch on the top and bottom of the processor, my internal fan was running all the time, not any more.
My laptop stays on all day, I am an artist and have several programs running at the same time. I use a larger battery so I was concerned about the ergonomic design (elevation), its very comfortable, fits my 15" laptop just perfect.
The plastic seems very durable, and I appreciate the aluminium screen(grate)for its great air flow, the fan does blow up onto the bottom of the laptop. No sliding problem with the rubber feet on the bottom of my laptop.
Really quiet fan, even when I keep it on high.
I would highly recommend this product.

I have owned four Alienware computers, including three laptops and one desktop computer. I was severely disappointed with all of them. My first two laptops all died within one year. And, my last two were replacement computers given to me by Alienware and lasted no more than two years. They have a bunch of power under the hood and therefore have a short shelf life. Although Alienware computers look really cool on the outside, it's what's on the inside that is horrendous. With exception to the graphics card, the rest of the components are poor quality. And, the engineers at Alienware did a poor job in constructing the computers. Placing the hard drive next to an overheating video card is not smart engineering. Furthermore, screws were missing on the inside and the casing is typically made out of cheap plastic. I highly recommend to stay away from Alienware and consider other high-end gaming computer brands.

Im loving this laptop. I was looking for something small to surf the web, project stuff on powerpoint, and play games from time to time. I chicked out a lot of net books.
I was close to getting the Eeepc 1215 dual core atom with Ion graphics for 499. This laptop was $775. After a lot of research I decided to get the considerable extra power this laptop offers. Im glad I did! This laptop runs stuff great, boots quick, and handles Dragon Age origns, portal and civ 5 just fine (though civ struggles with high settings. Most games run great on this with mid to high settings.
I love plugging it into my TV via HDMI and using a wireless mouse/ keyboard. Bliss!
This is a well built little laptop. It feels really solid, and seems like it will be able to handle the little bumps and bruises it may get while on the road.
Downside? Hmm... I would have loved for it to be even lighter. It is 4.5 pounds. I also would have liked Nvidia optimus auto switching, but switching the graphics is just an FN+F6 away.
Dell offers more powerfull configurations (i3, i5, i7) for more money, and you can get the base model of this laptop for 599 a limited time. The current price on amazon is still a solid deal with the 320 gig drive, and 4 gigs of ram, no tax and free shipping.
Overall I am very, very satisfied with this laptop. If you want to be able to play games, and have an ultraportable sized laptop, this is hard to beat. And it has an awesome backlit keyboard!

Just a quick note to say that this laptop is still going strong after a year, and a lot of use. Still love it!

I was not expecting this little laptop to run so smoothly especially running games like bioshock and mass effect 2 at the highest settings its completely amazing! and switching the gpu to save battery life is incredible. The only thing i do not like so far is the reflective screen and the speakers are not very good. but this computer runs games much better than i would DREAM

I ordered this laptop about a week ago and got it this sunday, i took the risk of buying a laptop from the US since we had different voltages since i live in kuwait but my fear was taken away and this laptop blew me away, In my opinion it had no cons up until now and it doesnt heat up quickly battery life is around 2 hours 30 mins fully charged, it comes with the quaser blue color when u power it up, the sound and graphics are really nice and i dont regret 1 bit of buying this amazing laptop, there is one thing wrong in the specifications when i ordered it, it turned out to be the intel i7-2670 but on the specifications it was the intel i7-2657 which is a minor mistake but the rest is all good ! you will not regret making this purchase trust me :)

I bought this through Amazon, kept it for two weeks, then gave it to my grandson, who was ecstatic to get it. I ordered it for myself as an all purpose laptop. It met most of my needs. All applications ran very fast, and web surfing was a joy. The backlit keyboard is very good, and you can adjust the settings of the track pad to fit your preferences. The ability to change the colors of the lighting on the keyboard and other components is very cool. I liked being able to select which programs used the dedicated graphics processor, and which use the integrated graphics. It is whisper quiet, and runs very cool. Battery life is very good with the proper settings. Screen resolution and clarity is excellent. And the sound it produces is outstanding - loud and clear. The rubberized finish feels so luxurious, and the included sleeve is a nice extra.
The only two things I did not like were the screen and the lack of a built in CD/DVD drive. The screen was simply too small for my aging eyes - this is not a negative for this laptop, but rather an indication that buyers should try before buying. It was the small screen that made me to decide to give it to my grandson. And while the absence of a CD/DVD drive may help keep weight and power consumption down, the need to hook up an external drive with two USB cables tends to defeat the whole portability concept, especially if you play games that require the CD to be active.
To summarize:
The pros:

I have owned this notebook for about 6 months now and I'm really happy that I bought this machine. I really wasn't in the market for a new computer but when I got a new job that requires me to be away from home about 90% of the time, I had to get a desktop replacement to help keep my sanity (TV is over rated). This little guy is awesome small and easy to carry around. The battery can last me between 3 to 6 hours depending on what I'm doing. I have yet to peg this machine out with 8GB of RAM it is really hard to do and I had some pretty powerful applications loaded (MW3, WoW, FFXI, CoH, SWTOR, SolidWorks, 3DS Max, Blender, Visual Studio 2010, Netbeans 6). I usually have at least 2-3 of these applications running at the same time and I have yet to see a major hit on performance.
A large disadvantage I think is the factory standard option HD is pretty small. Specially since Dell will partition some of the drive off so you can do a system recovery(inevitable on all computers). I need to use a large amount of hard drive space and 300GB seems rather small for me. Specially if you do a lot of 3D modeling and gaming on the same machine.
Another knock on this little guy, which really isn't a knock against the MX11 but the Optimus Chip. The Optimus only kicks in automatically if the application is in the list already or specifically launched with the graphics accelerator. It will not notice an application if it doesn't use Direct X, I hope that changes (You can get an application to load with the Nvidia GPU rather than the integrated Intel with some work).
Overall this laptop is a great machine to replace your desktop computer. I really enjoy this computer and I will most likely purchase another Alienware in the future, when it comes time to replace this one.

I ordered my Alienware M15x through the Dell website on 12/3/2009. Delivery occurred on 12/18/2009, which was the original order anticipated build completion date. Nice! The laptop is replacing a home-built custom quad-core Cosmos gaming PC.
During the purchase process, I opted for the RAM upgrade to 4GB 1333MHz, upgraded the video card to the 260m (and got a $50 Dell promo gift card from this), got the 1080p screen, and upped the hard drive to 320GB. I subscribe to Steve Job's notion that Blu-Ray is a bag of hurt, so I stuck with the DVD/CD slot burner.
Performance-wise, the M15x is Sea Biscuit. I've thrown several games at it, from Crysis (silky-smooth at high resolution), WoW, Torchlight, Fallout 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Half-Life 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Company of Heroes. All ran flawlessly, at max or near-max settings. The standard Core i7 1.6GHz (2.8GHz turbo) cuts through these applications like nothing I've seen. While I enjoyed overclocking my custom desktop PC, this machine doesn't really need it. It's greased lightning right out of the box.
Pros:
I liked the price point. I knew I was getting a great machine for the money, and what I spent matches what I received.
Weight. This is a desktop replacement, so I expected some heft. I like the fact that this thing has some meat to it. If I wanted a light, take-anywhere laptop, I would have bought a netbook.
Alienware effects/polish/workmanship - worth the price of admission. This is a beautiful machine.
Dell's service. Anytime a company underpromises and overdelivers, I'm a happy camper. The M15x arrived way ahead of schedule, packaged professionally, and came out of the box ready to roll.
My cons are pretty similar to other reviewers:
- screen is really reflective, but playing in a darker room mitigates this.
- touchpad. I don't know who was driving the boat when they decided on this particular hardware. It's not that bad, but it's not great either. Onscreen movement is pretty herky-jerky, even after software update. Mouse-users won't bother with it.
After years of desktop machines and business laptops, this is my first personal laptop, and start-to-finish, it's been a great experience. It's easily replaced my workhorse desktop for all my uses. I will gladly buy Dell/Alienware again down the road. Can't recommend it enough.

Decent gaming computer, but buying from amazon sticks you with factory defaults. It would be easier and probably cheaper just to buy from [...] unless you are like me and live in an area that they dont deliver to.

I am a Computer Science major in college and wanted a laptop with power for strenuous tasks like video/photo editing, graphics work, and playing games like Civilization V, Team Fortress 2, etc. At the same time, I wanted a computer light and small enough to toss in my backpack and take around to class all day without having to bring the charger. Power and Portability - madness? Think again.
After about 40 hours of research and reading countless reviews of over fifty different laptops (hey, for spending $1300+, I want to be well informed), I chose this one and am not disappointed in any way! The laptop blazes through my games at high frame rates while having the battery to last through hours of lectures. The seemingly indestructible solid build and fantastic keyboard just add icing to the cake. Search anywhere for something 14 inches with 6 hours of battery life and this amount of raw power - you won't find it. If you need performance in a small package, this little monster is just what you're looking for.

Size - Perfection of 14 Inches

This laptop has a 14 inch screen, which in my opinion is the perfect size. When you have a 14 inch laptop on your lap at the high resolution of 900P, you have plenty of space to do work, have two windows open at once for multitasking, and not feel cramped or limited. 14 inches is still large enough to watch movies and play games as well. At the same time, a 14 inch screen lest the laptop be small and fit into a backpack easily. Alienware has a reputation for making large computers, however it's not true in this case. The laptop is actually not as wide as most 14 inch laptops (width as in left to right side of laptop) by 0.5 inches, however it is a bit longer (front to back) by 1 inch and thicker (top to bottom) by 0.5 inches than most laptops. In my opinion the most important dimension is width (left to right) of a laptop, and this laptop is thin in that regard. One con, however, is that the laptop is about a 1.5 pounds heavier than other 14 inch laptops. The added heft actually makes this system really durable - as a college student, I've dropped it over a half-dozen times, stepped on it getting out of bed, and piled heavy books ontop of it in my backpack without causing any damage. This laptop is built like a rock and will withstand some rough use.

Battery Life

Battery Life really varies greatly - but you can guestimate it based on 4 settings: brightness, WiFi on/off, alien FX on/off (the glowing lights all over the computer), and battery mode (power saver, balanced, or high performance). The nice thing about this laptop is that it has Nvidia Optimus technology which allows the battery hungry powerful graphics card to only kick in when you're doing something that requires it (THIS SAVES A TON OF BATTERY).
I ran a few tests and here are my results:

By default, the computer's power options sets it up so that the full power of the graphics card will only activate when you plug the computer into an outlet (even in high performance mode). So to get max performance, either plug in the power cord or tweak the settings. The problem with tweaking the settings to allow full power of the Graphics card on battery mode is that sometimes the graphics card requires more power than what can be provided by the battery on its own and forces a computer shutdown. People on forums solved this problem by going into the BIOS and capping the CPU at 75% on battery high performance mode which fixes the power overdraw shut-off problem. In short, just bring your power cable if you need to full graphics and processing power.

Power - the internals

This specific model on Amazon features an 8GB DDR3 1333, sandy bridge i5 2.3Ghz, and GT 555M (you can order other specs via the Alienware site). The laptop is also offered with a quad core i7 (which I have). To be blunt, for a laptop this size, it's a freakin' powerhouse. From Folding to Rendering to Gaming, this laptop keeps surprising me. It blows by games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 on near-max settings, and runs newer games like Civilization 5 and Dragon Age at high settings without any lag and high frame rates. If your main focus on this laptop is gaming, the i5 will be just fine as the limiting factor in this laptops gaming performance is the graphics card. If you are planning on rendering or doing graphics work, I would recommend upgrading to an i7 by buying directly though Alienware.
My advice: Don't get caught up in numbers and benchmark scores - this tech will be outdated in a year anyway. See if the computer can handle what you need it to do, which I'm sure it will.
Note this is on max performance mode with the power adapter plugged in. Oh, by the way, the 150 watt power adapter required to power this beast is a beast itself. It's not thicker than normal power bricks, but is about twice as wide and the length of a pen.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Both are amazing! Alienware did an incredible job. They keys aren't chicklet (like Apple or Sony with "island" keys). Instead they are placed nicely together and require just the right amount of energy to be pushed and spring right back into place. I really don't know what else to say - it feels great and lets you type fast. Even though it's only a 14 inch laptop, the keyboard doesn't feel squished or small.
The touchpad has a smooth texture that still has some grip and feels comfortable for the finger. The left click and right click are the real winners here though. Rather than having the clicker on top of the laptop, you push them down into the laptop just like a keyboard key would be pressed down. This leaves you with a very satisfying click that just feels right.
I have trouble using other laptop keyboards and especially touchpads after being spoiled by the M14X's.

Screen, Sound, Ports and Connections

I'll start with the screen. 900P is amazing on this little guy - you get plenty of room to work with. The quality of the screen isn't as good as my external monitor, but it's still pretty good. I wouldn't get too caught up in the people trying to get perfect color replication, chose the setting and enjoy the screen. If your job depended on perfect color replication, you wouldn't be using a laptop monitor, you'd be using an expesnive, high end IPS screen. The screen looks great for movies and games and I am enjoying it. As with most laptop screens, the screen is reflective (though not as bad as many other laptops I've used). To reduce the reflections, you could avoid direct light shining onto the screen like lamps (or the sun) behind you and increase the screen brightness. Alienware actually sells a film you can put on the screen to reduce the reflectiveness, but I haven't bought it myself. In all honesty, a bit of reflectiveness in a laptop screen is good for privacy. It's awkward when the person across the isle on a flight can see everything you're doing perfectly.
Screen resolution? Great, anything higher would make text too small and hard to read.
Reflective? Yes, about the average in a laptop.
Screen Quality (contrast, color replication, etc): Above that of an average laptop, but not incredible.
Sound. This is where the laptop blew me away. THE LAPTOP HAS A DOWN-FIRING SUBWOOFER There is a 2.1 sound system built in and it can get very loud. I was extremely surprised how loud this laptop could get. Music sounds fantastic as does game and movie audio. The soundcard is awesome as well for plugging in headphones. I have a high end $150 pair of headphones (Audio Technica M50) and the laptop easily drives and provides great quality sound for even such highgrade 'phones.
Ports, Connections, and other stuff: I don't want to read off the spec-sheet, so I'll just talk about the cool features. USB 3.0 really is speedy and even tripled the transfer time of my USB 2.0 flashdrives and external hard drives. HDMI, Mini-display port and VGA ensure you can hook to just about any monitor or projector. The 2.0 powershare port lets me charge my phone even when my laptop is off which is pretty cool. I like the low profile slot loading DVD drive, but I still wish it was Bluray. Finally, the laptop's power cable is plugged in the back of the laptop as opposed to the side like most laptops. At first, I found this annoying and weird, but now I realized that it makes things much cleaner and easier to deal with plugged in devices with the power cord out of the way. I've had this laptop for a little less then a month now. It is a fantastic computer. The specs match what is listed here perfectly, and the seller did a fantastic job getting the computer to me quickly and safely.
The computer plays all my games flawlessly. It is very efficient, with impressive battery length with customized settings when unplugged. Graphics are absolutely beautiful, and I can run anything I throw at this thing with highest graphic settings without lag at all.
The backlit keyboard and AlienFX are neat features, they always impress. Great to show off with.
Honestly, people always rag on me saying Alienware overcharges and isn't worth the money. This computer is totally worth the price - any comparable machines are going to be around this price and not nearly as flashy. If you're looking for a high performance computer with wow power, this is the one for you.

Seems pretty solid so far. The case is nice and the inside is set up very nice and organized. The front USB connectors are located a bit wierd; however, no deal breaker. Very fast processor. Video card is adequate, but I put in a faster gaming card and also upgraded memory to 16GB. Memory prices are really good right now. The two SATA6 ports are good as well as 4 additional SATA3 ports. I put in a Crucial SSD and use the included 2TB drive for programs and storage. Windows boots in about 10 seconds with the SSD which is also SATA6. All and all the system is nice looking, fairly quiet for a computer and has a liquid cooler on the CPU which keeps my temps around 32C. The front USB3 and rear USB3 ports are nice. There are only 2 USB3 connectors, but there are few USB3 peripherals right now. I have an external USB3 HD attached for backup. Transfer rates are roughly 60-70 MB/Sec.
The system was fine off the get go; however, my upgrades have made it my dream machine. I also installed a blu ray burner which has been nice. No issues with this at all. I didn't buy it from Amazon, but got it at the Egg. The shipping box is rather large, about 4ft x 3 ft x 2ft. The system itself is rather heavy as well, but it is worth it. Since Dell purchased the Alienware line, some have complained about quality, but I don't see any problems here.

Pros: Cool looking exterior. Top of the line video card.
Cons: Overpriced. Easily overheats. Sub par components. Poorly engineered on the inside.
I have owned four Alienware computers, including three laptops and one desktop computer. I was severely disappointed with all of them. My first two laptops all died within one year. And, my last two were replacement computers given to me by Alienware and lasted no more than two years. They have a bunch of power under the hood and therefore have a short shelf life. Although Alienware computers look really cool on the outside, it's what's on the inside that is horrendous. With exception to the graphics card, the rest of the components are poor quality. And, the engineers at Alienware did a poor job in constructing the computers. Placing the hard drive next to an overheating video card is not smart engineering. Furthermore, screws were missing on the inside and the casing is typically made out of cheap plastic. I highly recommend to stay away from Alienware and consider other high-end gaming computer brands.

I have been looking at this item for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger. My concerns with the speed of the processor on the Core 2 rather than i5 and i7 and the high price were my only reason not to buy. After reading about the battery hit taken on this with the faster processors and the price dropping about $100 so that the price difference with the i7 become quite large, I decided to go with the Core 2 and I am glad I did.
First off, the screen is glossy and only of average brightness but the viewing angles and the ability to turn the contrast all the way up and still see a good picture a plus. Second, there is no bluetooth but there are so many tiny dongles these days it isn't a huge issue for your mouse or headphones - just use of one the three usb ports. Third, the reason to buy this is for gaming and I am happy to say I was able to load all my games on the spacious 320gb hard drive with room to spare and they are all playable anywhere from medium to ultra settings. I play almost exclusively real-time strategy titles such as StarCraft II and the Command and Conquer titles. They all run really good.
The build quality is phenomenal on this thing. It is fun to just look at and admire. Being able to change the lighting in five zones and in various ways makes night computing perfect. The small keyboard is a little tougher to type on than a chic-lit style on a netbook but the razor sharp backlighting makes it work out fine after a little practice. Touch typing works great. The wrist area does not show fingerprints, the mouse has a great texture and really soft press buttons but I use an external mouse.
My first unit did not work the second day. It went black screen on me and Amazon shipped me a replacement the very next day that has been perfect. I also went into the bios on the second one and enabled turbo mode and it works - no blue screens.
I spent all day loading up my gaming titles and look forward to playing on the go and around the house a lot more now. I was also pleased that 1080p YouTube worked flawlessly and my programs seem snappy. So far, so good, enjoying it. The kids love it too and like to change the keyboard to pink for the girls and incredible hulk green for the boys.
A fun toy, I hope to enjoy for a long time, and recommend.

This thing is perfect for me. Its light, compact, long battery life, and has the GPU needed to play my games on medium settings. I sometimes have to carry alot of other gear so the compactness and light weight is very nice. I have used the ASUS G73 series (they make great desktop replacment systems and are very powerful) but those are WAY to big and heavy for my intended use. I wont get into the lights issue as that has already been covered in other reviews.
I did ALOT of research before this purchase. I really wanted the R2 version with the i7 processor and optimus. However I went to several forums and there are many problems with the i5/i7, optimus, and DX10 when it comes to games like Civ V. The R1 has manually switching (FN+F6) and drivers that work really well with DX10. I really like the manually switching to save battery life when doing mundane tasks that dont need the 335M GPU. I also downloaded the updated BIOS (A05) and all the other drivers from the dell website and they all work fine.
I played the Civ V demo with everything on medium with textures and water on high at max resolution and it was very smooth. Company of Heroes online (the best RTS EVER made, its free and its even better than SC2!) plays perfectly on this machine. It also came with Portal for free on Steam, and it plays flawlessly with everything on high. I dont play very many FPS on PC because I have a 360 and PS3 and thats what all of my friends have. I also have a custom gaming desktop rig that I built my self using MSI parts so if I want to do some heavy PC gaming at home I use that.
After I updated the BIOS I was able to overclock the CPU to 1.6 according to CPUZ (great program). The overclocked Core Duo is comparable to an i3 when it comes to speed, the i5/i7 really isnt that much faster, and the battery life takes a big hit too. Some games run better on the R1 and a few R2 users have even traded in their systems to go back to the R1.
The R2 version from [...] will cost you around $1200 out the door with the same specs (except the processor and bluetooth) as this one on amazon. The R1 comes in cosmic black vs the R2 soft touch stealth black. You cant really go wrong the R1 or R2 but there is a well documented hinge issue on both machines if you look on other forums such as [...]. I guess I got a good one because the screen does NOT touch the keyboard on mine. Also the screen is really glossy. I dont use this outdoors so it is not an issue for me but it could be a deal breaker for others.
So if you need a light, extremely portable laptop, and want to play some Company of Heroes, SC2, or Civ V on the move, get the M11x. If you want a big, super powerful, heavy, low battery life destop replacement then look elsewhere.

Alienware seems to have gotten all the "little things" right with this laptop. The form factor is large enough to game or do "real work," yet it is small enough to be portable. The strange-looking beveled keyboard is actually very pleasant to type on - fewer errant keystrokes and better speed. The trackpad has discrete buttons with nice tactile feedback. There is no annoying bloatware (trial AV, toolbars, etc) like you might find on an HP. I was worried that the styling would be garish and distracting/embarassing, but it really isn't that bad.
The components, are, of course, top notch. You could probably get them in other computers as well, though.
Overall, no complaints.

well made and very sturdy. The keyboard portion of the laptop itself is very well laid out, making for easy reaches. A Gamer I'm not. My theory in choosing this laptop is that a gamer laptop would contain all the "bells and whistles" that I'd like in a laptop. I was right! Great Laptop, and I'm TOTALLY PLEASED with my purchase!

I have been a PC Gamer since the PC game was invented. I have owned a few computers in that time.
The Alienware Desktop and Laptop I own have been superb machines in every respect. The desktop I used for over 5 years playing Everquest on average 6 hours a night 5 nights a week and 10 hours every Saturday. I never had a single problem in all that time until the Hard drive gave up the ghost. I replaced it with an Alienware laptop because I had not upgraded a single thing in that desktop computer and it was a bit out of date. I have used the laptop for 2 years just as hard and not a hicuup.
I expect a good tax return this year and with some cash I have saved I am going to buy the baddest Alienware custom built from the Alienware Website.
I understand that most computers are made of the same basic components that are available. But how those components work together and the outstanding build quality in an Alienware is unmatched by few companies.
